A Statistical Survey of Neoplasms among Chonnam Inhabitants


Abstract
The biopsy files collected from January, 1971 to December, 1975 were surveyed at Department of Pathology, Chonnam University Medical School. The results were as follows.
1. Among 19,119 cases, benign neoplasms were 1,305, malignant neoplasms 4,157, and each contributed 6.7 and 21.4 per cent respectively.
2. Uterus was the most frequent site involved by benign neoplasms. About half of the cases were adenoma, leiomyoma and polyps.
3. The preferred sites of involvement of malignant neoplasms were stomach (21.6%), uterus (17.8%), liver (7.2%), lymph node (5.9%), lungs and bronchi (4.7%), etc. in decreasing order of frequency. The most common site of malignancy in male was stomach (27. 1%) and in female, uterus (39.6%).
4. Histologically, adenocarcinoma (5l. 5%), squamous cell carcinoma (32.6%) and liver cell carcinoma (7.5%) contributed more than 90 per cent of all malignancies.
